Prevent Costly Breakdowns With Grease Trap Maintenance
A grease trap works continuously to prevent fats, oils and grease (FOG) from entering your drainage system, so regular grease trap maintenance is essential. Our planned grease trap servicing helps keep your system operating efficiently by identifying wear and developing faults before they lead to costly breakdowns or disruption.
Preventative servicing is far more cost-effective than emergency repairs. Every commercial grease trap maintenance visit includes a thorough inspection to assess your system’s condition and performance, helping extend its lifespan, maintain effective grease separation and keep your business running smoothly.
Signs Your Grease Trap Needs Servicing
Many common grease trap problems develop gradually and can often be avoided through planned servicing. If you’ve noticed any of the following signs, it may be time to arrange a professional inspection before the issue becomes more serious.
Increased Odours Between Cleans
Persistent unpleasant smells can indicate that grease is accumulating where it shouldn’t or that the system is no longer operating efficiently. Regular servicing helps identify the underlying cause before odours begin affecting your kitchen or surrounding areas.
Slow Drainage
If sinks or floor drains are emptying more slowly than usual, your grease trap may not be separating FOG effectively. Routine inspections can identify restrictions or developing blockages before they lead to complete drainage failure.
Reduced Grease Separation
When grease begins passing through the trap instead of being retained, your drainage system becomes increasingly vulnerable to blockages. A servicing visit checks that the unit is operating correctly and continues delivering effective grease separation.
Visible Wear or Damaged Components
Over time, seals, baffles, lids and internal components can deteriorate through regular use. Identifying worn or damaged parts early helps maintain reliable operation and can prevent more expensive repairs later.
Increased Maintenance Frequency
If your grease trap appears to require cleaning more often than normal, it could indicate an underlying performance issue. Servicing allows our engineers to investigate the cause and recommend practical solutions rather than simply treating the symptoms.
Poor System Performance
A grease trap that no longer performs as expected can place additional strain on your drainage system and increase the risk of costly disruption. Planned servicing ensures every component is working as intended and helps restore optimum performance where required.
Doing the Dirty Work
Keeping your grease trap operating efficiently requires more than simply responding when something goes wrong. Aqua Mundus provides planned grease trap servicing and scheduled maintenance programmes that help businesses stay compliant, reduce disruption and protect their drainage systems over the long term.
As part of our service, we carry out scheduled inspections and deep grease trap cleaning where required to ensure your system continues working as intended. Our extensively trained engineers are experienced in servicing every type of grease trap and interceptor, giving you complete confidence that your equipment is in safe hands.

Our Grease Trap Servicing Process
Regular servicing should give you complete confidence that your grease trap continues to perform efficiently between visits. Our structured servicing process allows us to identify developing issues, maintain peak performance and help extend the life of your equipment.
Initial System Inspection
Every visit begins with a thorough inspection of the grease trap and its surrounding drainage system. Our engineers assess the overall condition of the unit, inspect internal components and check for signs of wear, corrosion, damage or excessive grease accumulation that could affect performance.
Full Service and Performance Checks
We inspect all accessible mechanical components and moving parts, ensuring they continue operating correctly. Performance checks allow us to confirm that the grease trap is separating FOG effectively while identifying any faults before they develop into larger problems.
Cleaning and Waste Removal
Where required, servicing includes cleaning the unit and removing accumulated grease and waste so it can continue operating efficiently. If you require emergency assistance or standalone cleaning, visit our dedicated grease trap cleaning page to learn more about our rapid response cleaning services.
Reporting and Recommendations
Following every visit, you’ll receive a detailed service report outlining the condition of your grease trap, any work completed and recommendations for future maintenance. If repairs are required, we’ll explain the findings clearly and advise on the most appropriate next steps, including recommended servicing intervals.
Planned Maintenance Packages
Tailored Maintenance Schedules
We build servicing schedules around your kitchen’s usage, ensuring maintenance takes place at appropriate intervals to keep your grease management system operating efficiently.
Monthly, Quarterly or Bespoke Servicing
Whether your grease trap requires monthly inspections, quarterly servicing or a completely bespoke maintenance programme, we’ll recommend a schedule based on your operational requirements and FOG output.
Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)
Our Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programmes reduce the likelihood of unexpected failures through scheduled inspections, servicing and ongoing performance monitoring.
Reducing Long-Term Operating Costs
Routine commercial grease trap maintenance helps reduce emergency repair costs, extend equipment lifespan and minimise operational disruption, making planned servicing a cost-effective investment over the long term.
Grease Trap Servicing for Every Industry
Every commercial kitchen produces fats, oils and grease at different volumes, which means servicing requirements vary from one business to another. Aqua Mundus provides tailored grease trap services for organisations across a wide range of industries, ensuring every system receives the level of maintenance needed to remain efficient, compliant and reliable.
Compliance and Environmental Responsibilities
Regular grease trap servicing plays an important role in helping businesses meet their environmental and legal responsibilities. A well-maintained grease trap helps prevent FOG entering the public sewer network, reducing the risk of blockages and costly enforcement action.
Businesses also have responsibilities under legislation such as the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and their Duty of Care when handling and disposing of grease waste. Waste removed during servicing must be transported by a licensed waste carrier and disposed of responsibly at authorised facilities.
Maintaining accurate servicing records also demonstrates that your grease management system is being properly maintained, providing useful documentation for environmental audits and internal compliance procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do you remove a grease trap?
Removing a grease trap should always be carried out by experienced professionals. The process typically involves isolating the unit, safely emptying and cleaning its contents, disconnecting it from the drainage system and removing it without causing damage to surrounding pipework. All grease waste is transported and disposed of by licensed waste carriers in accordance with current environmental regulations. If your grease trap has reached the end of its lifespan or needs replacing, Aqua Mundus can also provide professional grease trap removal services.
-
What is included in a grease trap service?
A typical grease trap service includes a thorough inspection of the unit, performance testing, checks of mechanical and internal components and cleaning where required. Our engineers also assess the condition of the grease trap, identify any developing faults and provide recommendations for future maintenance or repairs to help keep your system operating efficiently.
-
What is the difference between grease trap servicing and grease trap cleaning?
Although they’re closely related, grease trap servicing and grease trap cleaning are not the same.
Grease trap cleaning focuses on removing accumulated FOG and waste from the unit, usually when excessive build-up or overflows occur. It’s often a reactive service that restores the system to working order.
Grease trap servicing is a planned maintenance programme that includes inspections, performance checks, component testing and preventative maintenance to identify issues before they develop into failures. Regular servicing helps reduce unexpected breakdowns and extend the lifespan of your equipment.

-
Can you service grease traps nationwide?
We can cover the whole of mainland United Kingdom, and even if you’re outside of this area, we’d encourage you to contact us to check whether we can get to your location or know a trusted partner business that can. From Aberdeen to Birmingham, Blackpool and Oxford, you’re covered by Aqua Mundus.
-
Do I have to sign up for an ongoing maintenance plan, or can you do single callouts?
The choice really is yours. We completely understand that smaller businesses and kitchens that deal with fewer fats, oils and grease (FOG) may prefer to have their grease traps cleaned on more of an ad-hoc basis, while bigger pub and restaurant chains will need the peace of mind and time-saving services we provide as part of our pre-planned maintenance packages.
If you’re not sure which approach is best for you, contact us to discuss your needs and we’ll help you find the right way forward for your unique needs.
-
How often does a grease trap need to be cleaned and serviced?
Service frequency really depends on the size and type of device you have installed, and the throughput of fats, oils and grease (FOG) your kitchen deals with. Bigger, busier businesses that serve many hot meals a day will likely need more regular fat trap servicing, while smaller businesses like cafés and bistros may need less frequent visits.
Get in touch with your details, and we’ll be able to advise further, so you’re never spending too much, or not enough, on your grease trap maintenance.
-
Can you empty my grease trap waste out of hours?
Yes, we do offer specialist services for businesses that rely on out of hours servicing for their grease traps and grease management systems. Contact us for more details as we build each package around your bespoke requirements.
-
Why can’t I empty my grease trap myself?
Grease waste requires disposal by a registered waste carrier. Servicing of traps requires specialist tools and takes time out of your already busy schedule. In our experience, we’ve found that restaurant owners and kitchen managers find it much more efficient and effective to rely on the specialists at Aqua Mundus.
This is especially true when it comes to keeping your unit legally compliant and disposing of the waste in an environmentally responsible way. We remove the headache of having to worry about all this yourself.
-
How do you clean a below-ground grease trap?
Grease traps that are located below the ground are generally larger in size, ranging from 150 litres through to 10,000 litres in capacity. Grease interceptors up to 1,000 litres can be emptied using a mobile vacuum tank, whilst larger below-ground grease traps use a vacuum tanker lorry to empty and dispose of their waste.
Did you know…
Around 75% of sewer blockages in the UK are caused by fats, oils and grease (FOG).
